Presentation of the residency process, followed by a discussion

the double solo mirror residency has been developed following a desire to create spaces with structured support for open ended processes without conditioning the artistic outcome. It is a curatorial concept facilitating new formats for artistic exchange and reflection in relation to choreographic solo practices. The project takes place as a series of double residencies where one invited solo artist is asked to invite another solo artist to join the residency.
The residency is centered around what ”Performative Feedback” could be, with the specific question ”How can two solo practices reflect each other through performance rather than talking, as a way to feedback?” The residency allows for an experimental atmosphere and process that brings value to the work of reflexion itself, rather than the result. The period ends with a public sharing of the process with the two artists, followed by a discussion.
This is the second occasion out of three, with the invited choreographers Sonja Jokiniemi and Aitana Cordero.
For the 2019 double solo residencies, we have invited the choreographers Jamila Johnson-Small/Last Yearz Interesting Negro, Sonja Jokiniemi and Rani Nair.
Sonja Jokiniemi (FIN) is a choreographer, performer and self-taught visual artist based in Helsinki, Finland. She makes transdisciplinary work with research interests in thing ecologies, language and thinking structures, neuro and psychodiversity. She works with objects, materials and drawings as collaborators on stage and expands her performance practice to exhibition formats also. Jokiniemi graduated from DAS Theatre (previously DasArts) MA Degree programme in Performing Arts in Amsterdam 2013. Prior to this she has completed BA degree on Contemporary Dance at Laban Centre in London 2006. Sonja Jokiniemi’s work has been supported by STUK – House for Dance, Image & Sound, Zodiak – Centre for New Dance, Dampfzentrale Bern, Kiasma Theatre, Workspace Brussels, Moving in November festival, Veem House for Performance, and Regional Dance Centre of Eastern Finland. Jokiniemi has been awarded two grants by Arts Promotion Centre Finland (Taike): a one-year artist grant for 2017 and a three-year artist grant for 2018-20. Between 2018-2020 Jokiniemi will be working in collaboration with STUK – House for Dance, Image & Sound (Leuven) in the framework of the Life Long Burning – Towards a sustainable Eco-System for Contemporary Dance in Europe project (2018-2022) supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.

Aitana Cordero (ESP/NL) is a mover, a curious, a wonderer, a reader, a Gemini, a cook, a mother…She trained many years dance and improvisation. She did Judo intensively in the past and has always been busy with martial arts. In June 2006 she graduated in her Choreography studies at the SNDO (School for new dance development) in the University of Amsterdam and in June 2008 she finished the Master in Choreography and new technologies Dance-Unlimited also in Amsterdam. Since 1999 she creates her own work like dance pieces, theaters plays, installations, performances, films, gastronomic proposals and “things” that have been presented in several cities in Europa, North America and Asia. She also collaborates and performs for others. Since 2001 she combines her creations and artistic works with teaching in different universities and schools and lately she is a reflective company – a dramaturge in other ́s makers work. Some of the recurring interests in her works are the Body and how it can encounter other bodies, intimacy, sex(n)uality, the physicality of violence and fighting, strategies of sharing and the exploration of the protocols of theatre. Other relevant interests that use to condition her processes are philosophy, cinema, literature, gender studies, painting and cooking. Lately she is preparing a marathon, trying to be a pilot, she is back to study martial arts and is again afraid of electric storms.
